Who Are We?

The Young Leaders is a regional prestigious program among the high schools sponsored by the RBTT Bank. The program is designed to get students involved in the development of their country by implementing projects on a selected theme. The theme for this year’s program is “Shaping the future: Cherishing Life, Embracing Family Values, Respecting one Another.” This program is geared towards developing the youth on a wholistic level. It helps to develop and enhance leadership, communication, social and also teamwork skills.

As Young Leaders we seek to engage in community based projects and regional projects all the same. In 2004 Hurricane Ivan devastated the country of Grenada and the Basseterre High school Young leaders saw an urgent need to help with the rehabilitation efforts and sought to do so by embarking upon a fund raising drive and by seeking corporate sponsorship. In April 2005 several members of the group traveled to Grenada and presented the members of the St. Georges Anglican High School with a computer, school supplies, clothing, food products and a monetary donation.

Dealing with Differences

Under this year’s theme, we organized an educational session on Monday 12th December, 2005, where two facilitators, Reverend Algernon Lewis and Ms. Mutryce Williams, addressed the student body under the topic “Dealing with differences.”

The areas addressed were:

Dealing with social class

Physical impairment

Racial and religious differences

Controversial issues like sexual orientation.

This session was open to the entire school and was covered by the media. At the end there was a question and answer session that was enlightening. Students interacted well with the facilitators and the session was a success.
